Gerald Rhemann is an accomplished astrophotographer who began his journey in 1987, inspired by Halley's Comet. Rhemann specializes in wide-field photography, particularly comet photography, and has developed sophisticated processing techniques to capture both comets and surrounding stars in focus.

He photographs under the clear skies of the Austrian Alps and the deserts of Namibia.

Over the years, Rhemann has become one of the best astrophotographers globally. His images are frequently published in books, magazines, and NASA websites. They have won also several awards. In 2022 he was the overall winner of the "Astronomy Photographer of the Year" organized by the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

It was a privilege that Steven Hawking personally decided to print one of his comet pictures in his book “George’s Secret Key to the Universe”.

Comet Hale-Bopp in Perseus by Gerald Rhemann: Discover the Legend

Revisit one of the most iconic celestial events of the 20th century with Gerald Rhemann's captivating image "Comet Hale-Bopp in Perseus 1997". This striking piece of cosmic history allows you to experience the awe and wonder that captivated millions across the globe.

    A Journey Through Time

Comet Hale-Bopp, an astronomical phenomenon, reached its closest approach to Earth on March 22, 1997. As it passed perihelion on April 1, 1997, it dazzled viewers worldwide with its brilliant blue-and-white twin tails stretching 40–45 degrees across the night sky.

Unique in its brightness, appearing 1,000 times brighter than Halley's Comet at the same distance, Hale-Bopp became one of the most viewed comets in history. Its brilliance was unmistakable, outshining all but the brightest star, Sirius, and making a rare celestial appearance that lasted for 18 months.

Captured on April 2, 1997, in Hafnerberg, Lower Austria, this photograph highlights the comet alongside the stunning double cluster in the constellation Perseus. Using an 8" Celestron Schmidtcamera with a Losmandy G11 mount and Kodak Pro Gold 120/400 film, Rhemann immortalized this breathtaking moment in a seven-minute exposure.

The result is a mesmerizing image that not only showcases Hale-Bopp's twin blue-and-white tails but also tells a story of wonder and discovery.
